It's time for the U.S. to allow gay marriage

The role model country for freedom and human rights, the United States, seems to frequently ignore its own blatant bigotry and oppression. A new battle unfolding in Congress, and likely to impact our neighborhood, is the long-standing prohibition against homosexual marriage.
What is the purpose of marriage? Anthropologically, marriage serves similar functions in most societies. Historically, marriage provides efficiency, stability, access to sex and children, inheritance and power. In modern times, free will and individual happiness replace access to sex. It is time for the model democracy to set aside prejudice and intolerance and take yet another step toward ensuring equal rights here at home.
